Life & Career Milestones
My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
I made a decision to go to law school, primarily as a means to be successful later in politics.
2.
Having been a successful student in college, law school was difficult. I found that I needed to apply myself harder in order to graduate.
3.
During my first year of law practice, I averaged 60+ hours a week, in work that was not very rewarding - which led me to accept an interview with an insurance company.
4.
Within just a few years of working for an insurance company in CT, I was being given more and more responsibility, ultimately creating new products and gaining a national reputation.
5.
When my employer was acquired by another insurance company, I chose to leave that new organization and find my new and current home at Travelers.
6.
Over the past 20 years I've worked with some amazing people, created new products, worked through mergers and acquisitions, and helped build an industry-leading business.

Messages from Society in general:
There are too many lawyers in the world, and law school costs too much money.
How I responded:
I knew that going to law school was a necessary part of the the skill sets that I wanted to develop for my future, even though I wasn't certain that I wanted to practice law. Business, or politics were the areas that I viewed as my likely my future career. As with many decisions in life, others might have chosen differently for me. But, ultimately, we all control our own path.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
My father worked three jobs to support his young family - we were not well off. He instilled a work ethic in me that I know has helped me succeed. I worked in high school, college, etc. And I worked until the job was done, well.
