Life & Career Milestones

My path in life has been direct

  • 1.

I wanted a job as soon as possible, so went to night school, then took distance-learning courses while I worked 45 or more hours a week.

  • 2.

When I began working, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do long-term. I worked various jobs in the same company, gaining an extremely useful variety of experiences and skills to move ahead.

  • 3.

Sometimes I took a lateral job move in order to later advance. A broad range of knowledge helps in the long run.

  • 4.

Setting aside time for my dip into helping with assisted living communities was difficult, but possible. I leaved to say no to taking on too much.

  • 5.

I was in my mid 50's when I jumped from financial services to being a business office coordinator in an assisted living community. Being older, the job market is daunting, so proving yourself is key.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Teachers:

Business is all about numbers and paperwork. There is no human interaction in effective business.

  • How I responded:

Find a way to incorporate the human element into business. I love numbers and paperwork (I know, but I really do), but there is so much more. It's out there, you just need to find it. I carved out time and volunteered at assisted living communities doing activities. I discovered that I enjoyed using the opposite side of my brain. The feeling when you connect mentally with someone that is having trouble negotiating through life is amazing.
